Are there ones around here? I would be interested in trying some events.
Well, it depends on what comes our way and what training you are committed to doing. As for lure coursing with sighthounds, all you need is a good dog. Almost zero training required. For an activity like competition obedience, it is hours of training. A few times a year there is coursing in CT, but if you hope to gave a field champion title, you have to travel. On Monday, Leo is going to compete 3 hours drive away in NY. Because he has his JC title he can compete in the Open Class against other dogs. TO acquire your JC, your hound must display an instinct to chase the lure. It must perform a course alone twice with two different judges and two different events. On October 18 and 19, the New England Rhodesian Ridgeback Club is hosting a coursing event in Griswold If you wanted to try lure coursing, I'd say start there. Also, you may want to be certified by the American Sighthound Field Association which allows you to compete with ASFA. Your dog must display an instinct to chase while running with another dog. Leo was just ASFA certified this weekend also. He ran with a ridgeback because there were no other Ibizan Hounds. You usually run with the same breed. Your hound must be AKC registered or have an ILP/PAL number. ILP/PAL is for purebred dogs who are not registered but would like to compete in performance and companion events such as coursing, obedience, and agility. Your dog must be altered. All you have to do is send in 2 pictures of your dog and proof of spay/neuter and in a few weeks, the AKC will send you your certificate. We will be at the Dog Ownership day. We are doing meet the breeds for Ibizans and I will also be talking about greyhound rescue.
I took my dog Hummer to a "Howlloween" party at H3 Pet supply in Shelton in October. He won 3 ribbons.
