The Online Home for Trumbull CT Dog Owners
there are a few links in here i was not able to 'bring' over, but the home page for this information is listed above. thanks to peter and june for taking the time to provide this information:
When a manufacturer instructs retailers to pull products from shelves (a “product pull”) without notifying consumers (a “recall”) it is referred to by Food Safety Advocates as a “Silent Recall.”
Some agribusiness industry critics use the term “stealth recall,” noting that this practice avoids consumer awareness when a business acknowledges its products are unfit for the marketplace, and has asked that they be withdrawn.
The FDA has issued a second consumer warning about imported chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as “chicken tenders,” strips or treats), subsequent to a spike in reported cases of development of Fanconi-like syndrome in dogs in the US and Canada.
Fanconi syndrome is a disorder in which the proximal renal tubules of the kidney do not properly reabsorb electrolytes and nutrients back into the body, but instead "spill" them in the urine. Untreated, it can result in death. For information please see our "Recalls Alert" at the bottom of our home page.
The toxic ingredient ethylene glycol (also found in brake and hydraulic fluids and rust inhibitors) in antifreeze is so poisonous that only a few licks can lead to death in just hours.
Dogs (any small animals) are attracted to sweet smell and palatable taste of antifreeze and will lap it up unknowing of the danger.
Ethylene glycol is rapidly absorbed and metabolized: peak blood levels occur within 3 hours of ingestion, quickly leading to organ failure. It is critical to get the dog to a vet immediately: when the initial dazed/unsteady symptoms subside the guardian often mistakenly believes the problem is over, (toxicologists call this the "latent period"); however, the ethylene glycol then enters the liver and kidneys where it is oxidized, resulting in acute kidney failure and damage to the central nervous system. There is no treatment that will reverse this damage: typically fatal within days. Please see our page “Natural Toxins & Poisions" for more information.
When preparing for seasonal entertaining, remember that Xylitol: used as an artificial sweetener across a broad range of confectionaries, including “sugarless” gum, candy, breath mints, baked goods, & toothpaste, can be deadly to dogs.
Xylitol causes sudden insulin release which leads to hypoglycemia (drop in blood sugar levels: the body is thrown into shock, as blood sugar levels can drop 50 points in only 30 minutes); coagulopathy (failure to clot), hyperacute liver failure, and hepatic encephalopathy (confusion, stupor and coma). Elevated liver enzymes and hyperacute liver failure can take only a few days to become fatal. Please see our page “Natural Toxins & Poisons” for more information.
